Extra police on Soho beat
Mayfair officers are being stationed in the middle of a Soho vice haven to give the impression of increased police presence.
The officers are being sent to the site of a former Community Safety Office in Peter Street, which closed in November last year despite having successfully deterred dealers and pimps for about three years.
But it was shut following a funding row between the Metropolitan Police and the council, with neither taking responsibility for the neighbourhood scheme.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that the Mayfair Safer Neighbourhoods Team has recently moved to more suitable accommodation five minutes away in Peter Street. The new premises will not alter the areas they patrol – they are dedicated to their specific ward – but will provide extra reassurance through high-visibility policing in the area.”
