Tories charge 20p to spend a penny
A TOILET tax has been imposed in Westminster as part of plans to raise £250,000 for services.
The old saying – spend a penny – has been taken literally by Tories.
Eleven of 26 public toilets in Westminster now charge 20p a visit.
The toll will see 500,000 fewer people use public toilets – down from 1.7 million to 1.2 million according to council estimates.
Bayswater has been targeted as the most used toilet with 260,000 visitors each year.
The council hopes to raise £36,400 in 20-pence pieces from the Bayswater Road loo.
This compares with Great Portland St, Westminster’s least used public loo, with a mere 49,000 users.
The move follows January’s decision to privatise four manned toilets in Westminster.
Councillor Paul Dimodenberg, leader of the Labour group said: “Once again, the Conservatives are more concerned with cutting services and increasing charges than providing a proper service to the public and visitors. This is typical of a council that puts a charge on even the most basic of services.” |
