West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 3 August 2007
Like the PO, move with times
• THE Poland Street Post Office is moving a couple of hundred yards up the road to Oxford Street. Anyone would think it was being repositioned in Outer Mongolia. Five-hundred names on a petition is a petition to laziness not rational argument. Just think how healthier we are all going to be walking an extra 200 yards.
And Alida Baxter’s paean for a past golden Soho is sentimental nonsense. To wistfully think life does not progress is antediluvian.
“Don’t come to Soho unless all you want is what you get elsewhere,” she moans. Does she mean everywhere enjoys Italian delicatessans, a French bread shop, a thriving gay community, a 24/7 real Italian coffee bar, late-night eateries, a Spanish tapas bar, sushi bars, dim sum restaurants, Korean restaurants, China Town and the theatres of Shaftesbury Avenue?
