‘Dirty cash’ mansion seized

A MARYLEBONE mansion has been seized after its owner admitted it had been bought with “dirty money”.
The £1.8 million house in Devonshire Mews North was owned by Bloomsbury-based businessman John Cannon.
The 58-year-old admitted money used to pay for the stately property came from drug trafficking and prostitution.
But he denied carrying out any crimes.
The Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) – a government agency recovering ill-gotten gains from crime bosses – seized the house after years of negotiations following a money laundering trial in 2003.
It was owned by a consultancy firm run by Mr Cannon called Caret Holdings and Investments Ltd, based in Bloomsbury.
A civil order awarding the property to the ARA was made on July 17.
In return, the ARA agreed to drop civil actions and tax-related cases.
