Unity in the community scores with young footballers

HUNDREDS of young people came to Maida Vale at the weekend for a unique football tournament to promote harmony and understanding in the biggest free event of its kind in London.
The Unity in the Community extravaganza in the Paddington Recreation Ground tested 800 young people in popular competitions including kick-up competition, a crossbar challenge and hardest kick and the best trick.
Knock-out tournaments for boys and girls were closely fought – but owing to the torrential rain two events for older teams on Sunday were cancelled.
The under-12s tournament was won by local voluntary sports group Actual Soccer and the under 14s by the team Raw Talent.
Eugene Minogue, the council’s sports officer, said: “We have one of the most diverse populations in the country, and sport is a great way of uniting the community.
“We hope the young people really enjoyed the weekend of footballing fun for them and their friends and neighbours.”
