Gay World Cup backed by the FA
THE first Football Association-endorsed gay World Cup will be held in Regent’s Park next summer.
The bid to host the next International Gay and Lesbian Football Association World Championship was made by Leftfooters FC.
Thousands are expected to turn out for the July 2008 games.
Ten 11-a-side pitches and six seven-a-side pitches have been reserved and 100 volunteers from Westminster are expected to assist.
The 20-man Leftfooters squad are this week jetting off to Buenos Aires to take part in this year’s tournament.
Mikey Collins said: “It all started as a social thing for gay people that met in the Black Cap. We set the team up in 2000 as a response to London Stonewall FC. “They take it a bit seriously and play to win in proper Sunday leagues. Our team is for people who just want to have fun. It was set up for the kind of players who never used to get picked.”
Simon Johnson, the director of corporate affairs for The FA, said: “The FA is absolutely committed to tackling all forms of discrimination and harassment and to promote equality.” |
