Bluetooth messages to warn visitors of Soho ‘clip joints’

ANYONE walking into a 30 metre wide “danger zone” of rogue hostess bars in Soho will be sent a text warning them to look elsewhere for their thrills, technological wizards in the council have announced.
The electronic messages, sent using “Bluetooth” technology, have been commissioned to inform unsuspecting customers about two clip joints in Great Windmill Street flanking Soho Parish Primary School.
Clip joints are fake bars that use scantily-clad women to entice customers into seedy bars with the promise of a sex show for as little as £5.
They are typically faced later with an extortionate drinks bill frog-marched to cash machines by employees of the bars.
The warning text reads: “£5 to get in, £500 to get out. Criminals operate some of the hostess bars in Soho.
“Don’t enter without knowing what you’ll get for your money.”
It is believed between 500 and 1,000 will be sent each day.
The council confirmed pupils at the school will receive the texts, if they have their Bluetooth settings switched on.
A spokeswoman at the school said pupils were discouraged from bringing their phones to the primary.
Councillor Audrey Lewis, the Westminster City Council’s licensing chief, said: “By employing the latest technology and having a warning message sent directly to mobile phones advising people not to enter these sleazy and illegal clubs, we hope to thwart their activities every step of the way.”
