Mayor Ken has ‘opened the door for talks’ on renaming Edgware station
A CAMPAIGN to rename one of the Edgware Road Underground stations as Church Street Market kicked off in this week in City Hall.
London Assembly member Murad Qureshi floated the plan to Ken Livingstone at Mayor’s question time on Wednesday.
The London Mayor has “opened the door for talks”, according to Mr Qureshi in the build-up to a major shake-up of the Tube map.
Harry Beck’s classic design will in November be changed for the first time since 1933.
There are two Underground stations at Edgware Road: one for the Bakerloo line and the other for the Hammersmith, City and District and Central lines. Mr Qureshi said this was “confusing”.
He said: “Given that there are two stations called Edgware Road, which are not linked in any way, and there are no plans to do so, why don’t we rename the Bakerloo line station Church Street Market? Not only this very confusing but renaming the station after the market would do more than anything to regenerate the area. It would be very popular with the stallholders.”
He added: “I am confident the Mayor will open the door for me to sit down and talk to him about this.”
The Mayor’s official answer on the Church Street Market are to be revealed later this month.
A spokeswoman said: “Just check the website.”
Meanwhile, Church Street ward councillor Barbara Grahame said: “It’s a brilliant idea! Having two stations is a complete nightmare. Whenever I tell people to meet me at Edgware Road there is always confusion.” She added: “The market is coming on leaps and bounds and this would help even more. But the Tube station, although being quite beautiful, is in real need of upgrading.”
Church Street ward is one of the most deprived in the country, according to official statistics. Ms Grahame said the historic market was a vital source of income.
A French market will come to the Lisson Grove end of Church Street market on Friday September 21. |
