Traders back plan to rename their Tube station
TRADERS in Church Street have backed plans to rename Edgware Road Tube station after their historic market.
London Assembly member Murad Qureshi last week approached Mayor Ken Livingstone about changing the Bakerloo line station’s name to Church Street Market.
Paul Clark, who has been selling fruit and vegetables In the market for 24 years, said: “It’s amazing no one thought of it before. This will mean that if you are looking for the market, you like the early start, the hustle and bustle and then you’ll know where to go.”
Ron Simmonds, 74, who has sold flowers there for 54 years, said: “We have got two stations with the same name so it would be a good idea as long as they put up signs. This place is not doing as well as it should because it is not advertising. It used to be a terrific market. It was packed. “You could hardly walk down it.”
Stallholder Adrian White, 38, who lives in Church Street, said: “If it brings in more customers then that’s great – as long as it’s not a novelty ploy.”
Mr Qureshi said he would speak with Mr Livingstone at the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth this weekend.
He said: “Since they are revamping the North London line, they can do these alterations very easily.”
