Why this ‘Market’ Tube plan could stall
• I READ the article about the renaming of the Bakerloo Line branch of Edgware Road Station (Change here for Church Street?, September 14).
Firstly, a slight slip when it said the Central Line ran through the station when it should be the Circle Line.
Secondly, the statement made by Councillor Barbara Grahame when talking about the renaming of the station as Church Street Market. She said: “The market is coming on leaps and bounds.”
She has to be joking. Due to Westminster Council’s “modernisation” some years ago, the market has deteriorated.
The present market used to go right up to Lisson Grove with a number of antique stalls outside Alfies.
Plus, of course, the flea market in Bell Street. Westminster Council doesn’t like markets, they are untidy.
It would be rather bizarre if Ken Livingstone chose to rename the station Church Street Market while Westminster Council was busy trying to close the market down. MISS K CARPENTER
