Stop and search tactics causing ‘untold damage’
MORE than 5,000 people were stopped and searched by Belgravia and Charing Cross police officers between April and August, Metropolitan Police Authority statistics reveal.
Belgravia tops the charts in central London with 2,835, followed by Charing Cross with 2,698.
It is the first breakdown of stop and search statistics since the Terror Act came into force in 2003. People can be stopped only if they are in an area classed as a potential terrorist target.
The tactic was criticised by the MPA, which regulates the Met police, earlier this year.
They said a heavy-handed approach was doing “untold damage” to community relations.
Lord Harris, MPA member with special responsibilities for counter-terrorism, said: “This will enable local community monitoring groups, through which communities can scrutinise the use of stop and search powers in their areas, to challenge any disproportionality and discrepancies.” |
