Human rights activists protesting outside the Burmese Embassy |
Monks and activists on Burma vigil
MORE than 300 monks and human rights activists staged a vigil outside the Burmese Embassy in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, yesterday (Thursday).
They were campaigning for the release of political activists and economic reform in
Burma. The protest followed reports that soldiers had opened fire on protesters in the Myanmar city of Yangon. The leader of the opposition party National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, remains under house arrest.
Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell, shadow secretary of state for international development, said: “The wicked and illegitimate junta in Burma needs to know that the whole world is watching them and that these generals will be individually held to account for the actions they now take.”
