Thousands celebrate ‘cultural richness and diversity’ in square
AN estimated 30,000 people came to Trafalgar Square on Saturday to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid.
Organised by the Muslim Council of Britain, “Eid Square” featured live entertainment from a range of acts, a street bazaar and exhibitions and displays aimed at all Londoners.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said he would like to see the free West End celebrations become an annual event.
He said: “I am very pleased with the success of this year’s Eid celebrations. It is a wonderful opportunity for Muslims and non-Muslims to unite and experience the cultural richness and diversity of Islam. “It is a great occasion for all Londoners to enjoy the many things that London’s Muslim community has to offer and is a public statement of London government’s official recognition and celebration of the important role the Muslim community plays in all areas of London life.” |
