£10k for damage to listed building
THE owner of a Mayfair mansion has been fined £10,000 after bulldozing historic 250-year-old features.
Andrew Cecil breached planning laws after damaging the dado panelling and cornicing during restoration works to his house at 43 Charles Street.
He pleaded guilty in Westminster Magistrates’ Court to making unauthorised alterations and was ordered to pay legal costs to the council of £6,000.
The Grade II* building was built around 1750-53 by John Phillips in partnership with the architect and draughtsman George Shakespeare, on the Berkeley estate.
The council’s director of planning, Rosemarie MacQueen, said: “We have more than 11,000 listed buildings to safeguard.
“I hope this case acts as a warning to budding property developers and homeowners who may be tempted to flout the law.
“Our planning department is only too happy to offer advice and guidance to homeowners considering carrying out alterations, and we much prefer to spend time helping them before they carry out work rather than having to prosecute afterwards if they do it without the relevant consents.”
A spokesman for English Heritage said Grade II* listed buildings “are particularly important buildings of more than special interest”.
