West End Extra - Letters to the Editor
Published: 9 November 2007

A lot of noise but very little action

• ANDREW Ralph’s response about noise problems for West End residents only confirms my worst fears (Working to keep West End quiet, November 2).
He claims that inspectors are out on the streets every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. But what do they do? If they are really out monitoring noise from licensed premises, how is that nothing ever happens as a result of this?
Is he asking us to believe that these inspectors truly assess the noise levels in areas such as Dean Street, Dering Street, and Shepherd Market, for example, and conclude that the noise levels are acceptable?
If this really is the case, then the inspectors are clearly incompetent, and should be replaced. If this is not the case, then I must ask what are they doing, and why should council tax payers have to foot the bill for this non-existent service?
I am afraid that the reality is the council does absolutely nothing about excessive noise from licensed premises, and Mr Ralph’s letter suggests to me that it has absolutely no intention of doing anything.
