Call to speak out on violence against gays
A CALL has been made for Westminster Council to publicly deplore all violence against the gay and lesbian community.
West End councillor Ian Wilder delivered a 200-signature petition, collected in Old Compton Street this week, to the Lord Mayor in the Council House on Wednesday.
He said: “We have the biggest and most vibrant gay and lesbian community in Soho. “If we do not do something about this who will be next? I feel very strongly about this.”
Councillor Wilder said watching the scenes in Moscow earlier this year, when Peter Tatchell and other gay rights campaigners were beaten up, had led him to raise the issue.
He said: “I am not a gay rights campaigner, I don’t want people to think that. “But I when I saw those scenes in Moscow I thought to myself this is what happened in Germany in the 1930s. “Nobody said anything then and soon enough the concentration camps were springing up.”
A national survey on prejudice this week found five per cent of the 2,000 adults interviewed last month said they had suffered prejudice related to their sexuality. |
