Joanna is the star attraction
ACTRESS Joanna Lumley was star guest at a glittering tea dance in Park Lane on Sunday.
The star of the hit television sit com Absolutely Fabulous was joined by a thousand of Westminster’s elders in the Grosvenor House hotel.
They danced the jive, rumba and tango sets along and a selection of slower numbers in the hotel’s Great Room – a floor trodden by many famous names including Sammy Davis Junior, Ella Fitzgerald, Orson Welles and General Dwight Eisenhower.
Joanna said: “This is a wonderful event which will kick-start Christmas for many of Westminster’s older residents.”
The dance was organised by the senior citizens’ champion, Cllr Christabel Flight.
She said: “It was an honour for us that Joanna Lumley gave up her Sunday afternoon to attend, the guests were thrilled to see her. “Tea dances used to be such a popular event and so many people commented that it was like going back to their youth. I am sure this has kick-started the festive season for our older community and I hope this is the start of many events to come. “This dance would not have been possible without the generosity of Grosvenor House Hotel and the Daily Telegraph and many donors. I also want to extend huge thanks to the staff of the hotel, volunteers both from Westminster City Council and friends who made the event run smoothly.” |
