The best way to end park strife
• FURTHER to Mariella Frostrup’s remarks about Westminster’s pay-by-phone parking fiasco (Diary, December 14), the simplest solution to all this would be for Westminster to get together with Transport for London and combine the congestion charge with pre-paid parking.
Book 1-4 hours’ on-street parking before you leave home, or a car-park space if you need more time – with the charge covering both your entry to the zone and your parking. This would limit traffic to the number of spaces available at any given time. The price could be varied to ease traffic flow throughout the day and the scheme limited to one trip per day.
Resident parking permit holders should continue to be allowed to park near their homes, but pay the same as anyone else to move out of their own parking zone. MARTIN KENNEDY
