‘Give pigeons a square deal’ plea after starvation deaths
PIGEON lovers were in a flap on Tuesday over Mayor of London Ken Livingstone’s “cruel starvation” of the Trafalgar Square flock.
The Pigeon Activist Group (PAG) held a vigil on the square’s north terrace at noon in protest at Westminster Council’s and the mayor’s ban on feeding pigeons there.
Julia Fletcher, one of the group founders, said: “They’re a tame flock. Whatever the punishments, they’re going to stay here. They’re not going to leave like Ken Livingstone said they would. The punishments have been horrendous.”
The group claims the measures have resulted in the deaths of 2,500 birds, from starvation and from hawks which have been brought in to control numbers.
Campaigners uncovered the starvation deaths by sending frozen pigeon specimens to a government lab for examination.
Ms Fletcher said: “I don't know of anywhere else in the UK where it’s legal to starve a tame flock to death. Each bird that died was a life in itself, with partners and chicks. “When it suited us, human beings used them for entertainment, then the mayor came in and saw fit to impose all this dreadful suffering on them.” |
