Brian heads for Oxford Union debate
BRIAN Haw is to go on a 70-mile “peace walk” to speak in an Oxford Union debate.
It will be the first time the anti-war campaigner (pictured) has left London in almost eight years.
The debate is called This House Would Under No Circumstances Fight For Queen And Country – marking the 75th anniversary of the famous king-and-country debate at the Oxford Union in 1933, when the house carried in favour a vote for peace among students. The debate is being re-staged with Brian Haw, George Galloway MP, Walter Wolfgang and Scilla Elworthy proposing the motion.
Opposing will be Prof Michael Clarke, Col Bob Andrews, who will be flying in from Iraq and Devon Liberal Democrat MP Nick Harvey.
In the four days running up to the debate Brian and supporters will be undertaking a peace walk from Parliament Square in London to Oxford, starting at 10am on Monday.
The walk, open to the public, will go through Uxbridge and High Wycombe. The debate is Thursday, September 7. |
