West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 February 2008

Where is the Island?

• ON Friday, September 21, 2007, I wrote the following to the council:

Many years ago, with the help of then Councillor Mrs Lois Peltz, I campaigned successfully to have a traffic island in Shaftesbury Avenue, at the bottom of Frith Street, opposite Gerrard Place, a very busy pedestrian crossing between Leicester Square Tube station and Soho. It took us a year. The island was removed for the
relaying of the Victorian water pipes. It has not been replaced. It is difficult and dangerous to get across Shaftesbury Avenue at that point, and I think the Westminster City Council should arrange to have the traffic island replaced immediately.”
This resulted in the promise that it would be replaced within weeks of the relaying of the water pipes being completed.
It is now four months later, the water pipes have long been relaid, but the traffic island has still not been replaced.
I wonder whether whoever is responsible for doing so could read this and take action.
