West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 22 February 2008

Pay battle

• DO you work for a local council? Have you recently left your job in local government? If so, Unison would love to hear from you.
As the biggest trade union for council workers, we are campaigning hard to win a decent pay rise for our members this year. The government wants to limit it to 2 per cent – way below 4 per cent inflation – and we would like to know what that would mean for you and your family. Two per cent more would be just £4.45 pence a week extra for the lowest paid, who earn only £6 an hour.
If you have left your job in local government over the last couple of years, we would love to hear from you too.
Why did you leave? Where do you work now? How do the jobs compare?
If you don’t work for the council, but value the job home helps, teaching assistants, school meals workers and many more of our members do for you, please tell us what you think about a 2 per cent pay rise for them.
You can email us on njcpay2008@unison.co.uk or write to:
Heather Wakefield,
Head of Local Government, UNISON,
1 Mabledon Place, WC1H 9AJ
