West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 22 February 2008
Tough love’s what a green and unpleasant
land needs
• I thought I should voice my opinion as so many probably have about the low emission zone that has recently been enforced. It is unfortunate that it has come to this but I can honestly say I wholeheartedly agree, despite the ill fate that many companies will face as a result.
Anyone who works/lives in the city, or rather within the M25 will know how bad congestion and pollution is.
It is severely detrimental to health and quality of life.
I do however feel for the haulage companies whose owners must be facing a time of extreme stress as a result of the impact this zone will have,
I am not sure what help they are getting from the government but they should definitely be getting some assistance in adjusting their fleet to be ‘green’.
I think the actions of the mayor, albeit sometimes seeming “draconian” are a result of what the city/country has come to deserve.
It is because of capitalism that London has ended up in the state it has and will continue to do so.
