‘Senseless vandalism’ of Pimlico School
BULLDOZERS tore into Pimlico School yesterday (Thursday) demolishing the swimming pool during lesson time.
Teachers at the school said lessons were disrupted despite an official agreement that works would not start until after school hours.
Bridget Chapman, who teaches maths, described the demolition plan as “senseless vandalism” and “absolutely heartbreaking.”
Labour councillors have demanded an immediate inquiry, claiming the council does not know who is paying for the demolition work.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of the Labour group, said: “In typical cavalier fashion the Westminster Conservatives have sent in the bulldozers before the financial agreement has been signed and while pupils are still at their desks trying to study.”
A spokesman for Westminster City Council said: “These decisions relating to the early works were approved by the council’s cabinet and made public in December last year and should not come as a surprise.”
Pimlico School is being demolished following last month’s approval of plans to build a £35 million replacement after officials ruled the iconic building would be too expensive to renovate. |
