Kids dig deep to help build new sports centre

CHILDREN donned hard hats and yellow bibs to get their hands dirty and lend a hand in building a new sports centre in Paddington this week.
The £4.3 million eco-friendly sport and community centre in Crompton Street will have the usual indoor courts, gym and dance studio as well as the latest technological features including a video editing suite and a mini-satellite library. It is part of a council push for sports facilities in the Paddington area.
Councillor Daniel Astaire, cabinet member for customer and community services said: “Keeping fit and exercise are important for all of us – young or old – as we live increasingly sedentary lives. This centre will provide an excellent resource for young people to work and play – learning through both the benefits of fitness and exercise. It will also provide a valuable focal point for the local community where people can catch up with friends through sport or other community activities.”
The project, which should be complete by February 2009, is being funded by the council and a number of other bodies including Sport England and John Lyon’s Charity Trust.
