Harley Street all set to go green with 45 new trees
HARLEY Street is set to receive a £13,500 facelift that will transorm it into a tree-lined boulevard with the introduction of 45 pear trees.
But it’s not just a medical PR stunt to get us eating our five-a-day, because the trees won’t bear fruit.
The American species – Chanticleer – produce a spring bloom of white flowers but are fruitless.
The street, built in the early 18th century, will undergo the largest tree-planting scheme of its kind in Westminster.
Street environment councillor Andrew Bradley said: “I’m confident these trees will add welcome greenery that will not only make it an even more attractive steet to walk in, but help attract more wildlife.
“It is essential we help encourage biodiversity.”
The 45 trees will be planted from Marylebone Road to Cavendish Square and work is expected to be completed by March 19.
The decision followed the success of planting in Wimpole and Devonshire streets.
The cost will be covered by developers. |
