Post Office chiefs agree to open books

CAMPAIGNERS opposing the closure of four sub-post offices in the borough have been given a lifeline after bosses promised to open up the books of the branches in a bid to save the services.

The development, which came at an emergency meeting earlier this month, marks a significant breakthrough after negotiations between Westminster City Council and the Post Office appeared to have reached a stalemate.
Since talks began to save the branches in Harrow Road, Lisson Grove, Maida Vale and Soho, the Post Office has been reluctant to reveal commercial information because it was deemed confidential.
It means that the council will be able to consider the possibility of making post office services available from other locations.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, the council’s finance chief, said: “I sincerely hope the Post Office are genuine in their offer to open up their books so we can examine properly if there’s any way the council can save this vital service.
“Many residents who will be hardest hit have eloquently described how they will struggle in the event of closures, and I hope the Post Office will take these concerns on board.
“I give my assurance to our residents that we will do all we possibly can to help save this vital service, and will be scrutinising all the data very closely.”
A six-week consultation over the branch closures is due to end on Wednesday April 2.
London Mayor Ken Livingstone has said he is investigating possible legal action against the Post Office to extend the consultation.
