West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 April 2008

Give Peas a chance? Trust need to sort out security!

• I SHOULD like to offer some comments on the conditions upon the substantial number of estates which Peabody Trust “manage”, irrespective of any future developments which may be in the pipeline (Home truths on social housing,’ April 4).
On the North Kensington estate where I currently reside, the service, as I see it, has sadly declined – even, dare I say it, worsened since the closure of our estate offices and the demise of the caretaking staff. The system involving calls to the head office brings little relief nor any respite from the inefficiencies.
Rules allow the trust one month to complete routine repairs yet my dampness problem has persisted for around three months with no remedy in sight.
Precious little information can be gathered via a routine call to the offices of Peabody Trust and it is impossible to be connected to those ultimately responsible. Admittedly, one can make appointments to see the local manager, but this is time consuming.
Our security doors, have remained out of action for at least two months. We have no staff to oversee potential security problems on estates, that is, anti-social behaviour, and we are referred to the police, who neither have the inclination nor the resources to deal with this menace.
Recently, when calling the police regarding youths causing noise in the early hours, the police were even unable to locate the problem area.
The football cage on our estate, supposedy designated for local children, is left unsecured day and night and open to the elements. In other words, if anyone from anywhere fancies a game of football at any time, night or day, as far as Peabody is concerned, it’s “help yourself”!
We are repeatedly told by our landlord to call the police in respect of the endemic noisy behaviour perpetrated by locals, yet what difference does this make?
Inevitably, due to a lack of resources, whatever that might mean, it follows that our calls for help are ignored. How are some of us supposed to sleep at night when teenagers take it upon themselves to congregate on estates adjacent to flats until the early hours?
I could, I believe, compile a book, comprising the number of times that I have become involved in this time-wasting practice of calling the emergency services since these calls are ultimately fated as a waste of time.
Perhaps Peabody should concentrate on managing its already hard-pressed estates instead of endeavouring to build new ones.
I Walker
Dalgarno Gardens, W10
