A bright idea to light up streets
• YOUR interesting photo of “elegant” sample lanterns in Bloomsbury highlights a London-wide issue which you could also apply to street furniture and surfaces (How many designs does it take to light up Bloomsbury? April 11).
Our trust, in association with Camden, Westminster and English Heritage (and Lefebvre | Indal our manufacturers) has been working for some time on developing an elegant Windsor-style lantern for use on both façades and lamp columns suitable for historic areas such as Bloomsbury.
Our streets are full of a large collection of very ugly lantern forms and, contrary to the electrician you quote, it must surely be possible to light our streets from attractive lanterns and columns as was the case in the 19th century.
Our first prototype is up in Monmouth Street and certainly compares favourably with the ones you pictured in Bloomsbury.
We look forward to the whole of Seven Dials being lit both effectively and from a well-designed lantern. David Bieda
