Banksy interest revived with ‘CCTV’ wall
BANKSY has swooped on a wall in the West End to paint one of his largest works yet.
The guerilla graffiti artist evaded tight security including metal bars, barbed wire and security cameras to reach the wall on Sunday.
The work was done behind a sheet of polythene covering three storeys of scaffolding which was erected under cover of darkness.
It depicts a policeman photographing a child climbing up a ladder to daub the wall with the statement: “One nation under CCTV.”
By Tuesday throngs of Banksy fans gathered on Newman Street, off Goodge Street, to admire the work, which adorns a building owned by property investment company Structadene.
Edovard Lembé, 26, visiting London from France, said: “I had heard of Banksy even before I came to England. He is a kind of legend, a mystery man.”
Gillian Fruh, a 23-year-old student at the Sotherby’s Insitute of Art, said of the work: “There is an enigma about how he did it when there is such heavy security. He’s a genius.”
Structadene have said they will not remove the 20ft-tall work and are talking to Westminser Council about how best to preserve it. Richard Doffman, a property manager for Structadene, said he had no “philosophical objection” to the graffiti, but thought it “over-rated,” adding: “Couldn’t your six-year-old child have done the same?” |
