Sir Anthony’s Millbank Steps – impressive, but not suitable for Westminster
Sculptor’s vision is out of step with council

A GIFT from the renowned sculptor Sir Anthony Caro has been rejected by Westminster City Council because there was nowhere to put it.
Sir Anthony approached the council, intending to donate Millbank Steps – made from 100 tonnes of rusted steel and towering at a height of five metres – as a gift to the nation to go on display in a public space in the borough.
But a host of sites including Victoria Tower Gardens, Parliament Square and outside Westminster Abbey, were deemed inappropriate for the bulk of the sculputre that has an estimated worth of £2.5 million.
Councillor Robert Davis, cabinet member for planning, said: “Although we were impressed with Sir Anthony Caro’s statue Millbank Steps and flattered he wanted to give it to the City of Westminster, unfortunately we felt there were no suitable sites currently available.”
The sculpture has found a new home, but Sir Anthony had to look outside London. It is on display at Roche Court, near Salisbury.
