Rev David Gilmore |
St Anne’s open (nearly) all hours
THE rector of a Soho church has said he would consider longer opening times to cater for his Parish’s nocturnal denizens.
David Gilmore, 38, who has just taken up his post as the new rector of St Anne’s, Dean Street, outlined his vision of the church as a place of worship for all people “regardless of race or sexual orientation”.
He said: “It’s quite exciting to walk out of the front door and end up in Old Compton Street, an area that is busier from 10pm until 5am than it is during the daytime. “Under the previous incumbent the church wasn’t open every day. I’ve ensured the church is open from 8am until 5pm every day on weekdays.”
But he added: “Longer opening times might be something we would have to consider because of the unique nature of Soho.”
Mr Gilmore originally from Belfast, worked as a mental health social worker before being ordained in 2003. He replaced Claire Herbert, who left St Anne’s last September.
The church, was built in 1687 and was partially rebuilt after it was bombed during the Second World War. |
