Guide will ease fears of young sexual assault victims
AUTHORS Parminder Sidhu and Nikki Capuzzu show off their new guide aimed at helping young victims cope with the trauma of sexual assault.
The booklet, which was being launched at St Mary’s Hospital, was developed after its Haven Centre – a counselling service for victims of sexual abuse – identified a huge gap in information for young people.
Parminder said: “Young people who have been raped are extremely anxious about revealing what has happened to them. “They are worried whether they will be believed or not and what their friends and family will think about them. “We find that these young people are often bullied as a result of telling people what has happened to them and this impacts on their performance and attendance at school. “Parents tell us that their child is angry all the time and cannot sleep and eat – the impacts are wide-ranging.”
The booklet, named Coping with Sexual Assault A Guide for Young People, was funded by a £10,000 Home Office grant. |
