Gas lamps? What the Dickens!
• YOUR piece “Savile measured up for new look” (May 30) highlights the “Dickensian-style gas lamps” proposed for Savile Row, yet the picture shows a design for electric street lamps from the mid-20th century.
As Charles Dickens died in 1870 he is unlikely to have been illuminated by lamps such as these. However Westminster still has attractive working Victorian gas lamps which may well have shone upon the novelist. Brian Girling,
