West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:20 June 2008

Why alcohol and the narrow streets of Soho
don’t mix well

• IN densely populated areas such as Soho, narrow streets present a particular problem concerning the consumption of alcohol on the adjoining pavements etc.
Soho now resembles a gigantic “beer hall”.
Owing to changes – for the worse in my opinion – in licensing legislation over the years, alcohol consumption in one form or another goes on around the clock to the detriment of those with differing attitudes. Witness the fiasco on the Tube network just before the ban on alcohol consumption on public transport was introduced.
Are those of us concerned with this mayhem deemed to be “killjoys”? If so, then I am quite content to be regarded as such.
I am concerned about the comments made by Mr Rasala, who suggests that some of us should transport ourselves to a desert island or other remote region (Moaning minnies! June 13). Well, Mr Rasala, just give me the opportunity!
The solution ought to be to establish a happy medium so that all can be satisfied and enjoy the many pleasures of London with or without the accompaniment of drink.
I also notice this last weekend Trafalgar Square playing host once more to yet another mini pop concert. Why should these be inflicted on us all weekend after weekend?
Lengthy hours of opening do present problems even in residential areas such as mine when you can be easily awoken in the early hours by pub customers returning home having no regard for those of us in bed.
This occurs on a regular basis. Who are the killjoys here?
In this 24-hour culture there seems no accommodation for the silent majority.
I am inclined to take myself out of London at weekends to avoid these jamborees.
