West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 18 July 2008

Where has £30m gone?

•THE Labour government paid Westminster City Council an additional £13.3million last week under the Local Authority Business Growth Initiative.

Since 2005 the council has received an extra £29.3million from Labour through this source, which is aimed at improving the local economy throughout Westminster and particularly in the deprived parts of the city. Two issues arise.
First, these latest figures prove beyond doubt that Labour is pouring huge amounts of extra money into Westminster and that this money is meant to be spent on local people and local business.
Second, the facts are that, instead of this £30million being spent on local residents and local businesses, the vast majority of this extra government money is being spent by Westminster Conservatives on environmental projects in the West End.
Sure, a few crumbs are spread around in north Paddington but the needs of residents and business in the poorer parts of Westminster are being deliberately ignored by the Conservatives in favour of the interests of the big West End business.
Next time the Conservatives complain about not having enough money to improve the Church Street and Harrow Road areas just ask them where the £30million has gone.
Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg
Leader of the Labour Group
Westminster City Hall
