Result! nervous wait is over for a-level students

THERE were tears of joy and despair as students across Westminster discovered their fate in a little brown envelope yesterday.
Anxious mums and dads were put at ease, gap-year plans were plotted, impromptu counselling sessions sprung up in the playground and a whole lot of punching the air took place at Quinton Kynaston School in St John’s Wood on A-levels results day.
Among the success stories was Emina Fejzullahu, who arrived at the school from war-torn Kosovo not speaking a word of English three years ago. Now her only worry is how to celebrate her place at South Bank University where she is going to study business next year.
She said: “It’s amazing. I feel like I’m living someone else’s life. It was hard at the beginning, but everyone’s been great. I just can’t wait to get out there and get to work.”
Then there is Yanick Muzuyi, another student who has excelled against the odds. He came to the school in his GCSE year from the Congo having barely heard a word of English in his life.
After breezing his French, business and media exams, he has booked a place at Greenwich University.
“I can’t believe it. Obviously French was easy, but I never thought I’d go to University,” he said.
The school posted its best-ever results, with two star pupils getting four As each.
Headteacher Jo Shuter said: “I’m absolutely delighted with how we’ve done. It’s been a lot of hard work from everyone, but today makes it worthwhile.”
Results from other schools across the borough were last night coming in, but early indications are good. Over three-quarters of pupils achieved A-C grades, up five per cent from last year.
Xiao Chang, a pupil at St Augustine’s school in Kilburn, who notched up six A-levels and two advanced extension awards has won a place at Cambridge with five As and a B.
