Pensioners under siege get campaign boost from MP

MARK Field MP has joined the battle to save a group of Pimlico pensioners under siege in an old people’s home earmarked for demolition.
Tenants facing eviction from Wolfson House in Pimlico say they are “living in fear” after housing association Sanctuary Hereward announced plans the close the building.
After reading the story in last week’s West End Extra, Mr Field said he would fire off a letter to the chief executive of Sanctuary asking for a full explanation of the plans.
He said: “I shall be writing to the Managing Director of Sanctuary Housing with utmost urgency asking for a full commentary on the background to this rather disturbing matter. We are now awaiting a full response from him.”
Peter Green, who is leading the Save Wolfson House campaign, said: “We are living in fear. Everybody in the block in naturally worried about what is happening and Sanctuary are having some success in breaking up the community. It is becoming harder to keep the group together. But I have told Sanctuary I will not leave unless a judge sends me an eviction order.”
He added: “If there is a judge in the land that will treat the elderly in that way then I have been living in the wrong country all my life.”
Stephanie Killer, director Sanctuary Hereward said: “The vast majority of residents at the scheme understand why we need to consider the long term options for Wolfson house and are happy with our plans.”
This week the council appeared to offer a ray of hope to Wolfson House. Housing chief Cllr Phillipa Roe said: “Wolfson House is an independent sheltered scheme run by Sanctuary Housing Association, which is currently looking at a range of options to carry out improvements aimed at raising standards, disability access and improving the quality of life for all residents. We are supportive of Wolfson House remaining as accommodation for the elderly.”
