Half area’s shops sold knives to youths
DOZENS of shops are brazenly flouting the law and selling knives to youths despite a borough wide crack down.
Since launching an undercover operation with police in April, using teenage ‘mystery shoppers’, half of the shops tested did not ask for ID, as required by law – shockingly handing youths knives as if they were a bag of crisps.
Many of the businesses now face prosecution after the council vowed a tougher stance to stem the surge in knife crime blighting the capital.
Of the 48 shops that were tested by trading standards, 24 sold knives to the teens and at least five repeat offenders are due to face prosecution. |
