West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 September 2008

More of our history lost

A little of the West End’s early 20th century history slipped quietly away last week with the closure of the National Car Park’s facility off Denman Street.
When it opened in 1901 for clients of the City & Suburban Electric Carriage Co it was Britain’s first
multi-storey car park and it was claimed to be the world’s largest garage at that time.
A more sorry sight in recent years, the old garage and its surroundings await a revitalising rebuilding scheme.
