West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 19 September 2008
Tory silence speaks loudly
• THE news that Westminster Conservatives have increased the annual rent for the Church Street Nursery in Lisson Grove from £8,500 to £10,600 (almost 25 per cent) is a total disgrace.
Karen Buck MP is absolutely right to say that the Conservatives are “milking the parents” of the poorest children in Westminster.
While it is good to see that Ms Buck and Church Street Labour councillors Barbara Grahame and Aziz Toki are fighting for local residents, we have not heard a peep from the recently-elected Conservative councillor for Church Street, Mehfuz Ahmed.
Why has the new Conservative councillor not spoken out about this unjustified rent increase affecting the poorest of his constituents?
Church Street residents can only assume that he, like the rest of the Conservatives, supports the nursery’s rent increase.
I know politicians are notorious for breaking their promises but this must be a record – even for the Conservatives! Paul Thompson
