Theatres set to act on becoming eco-friendly
SPECTACULAR pyro-technics, jaw-dropping light shows and gargantuan set designs are just some of the reasons why West End theatre is attracting bigger audiences and raking in more money than ever before.
But, as the coffers swell, all the flashing, crashing and whizzing is putting a huge strain on the environment, pumping out 50,000 tonnes of carbon emissions into the atmosphere every year.
The findings come from a new action plan for Theatreland, entitled Green Theatre: Taking action on climate change, a joint initiative between mayor Boris Johnson and leading theatre groups including the Society of London Theatre and the Theatre Trust.
It outlines a number of measures that venues can take to reduce energy use in buildings – setting the bold target of a 60 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2025.
Mr Johnson said: “The power of the theatre industry to set an example in the fight against climate change is immense.” |
