Rock ’n’ roll years on the Street

CARNABY is synonymous with rock ’n’ roll.
From the Beatles to the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols to the Clash, the hallowed street has been well trodden by guitar gods.
Fittingly then, a new exhibition to celebrate its rich musical heritage is opening around the corner in Broadwick Street.
Rare and iconic moments from the annals of rock are captured
in a series of startling images, some of which have never been seen before.
Rockarchive is the world’s first print archive of rock ’n’ roll imagery, founded by acclaimed photographer Jill Furmanovsky.
The exhibition by Rockarchive opens on October 17 at 65-67 Broadwick Street, W1.

Day job just the ticket for parking supremo

WHO said all council chiefs were pen-pushing bureaucrats?

Westminster’s director of parking swapped his shirt and tie for a cap and blue bib to step out onto the front line and find out what it’s really like to be among the ranks of the most hated profession in London.
Perhaps making Alastair Gilchrist a Civil Enforcement Officer (parking warden in pre-job title inflation days) for a day was some sort of a perverse way of saying thank you, as it was almost the last thing he did before being called up for a promotion by chief executive Mike More.
Alternatively, it could have been a sadistic warning shot.
Nothing like a bit of blood and thunder from an irate motorist to keep you in check.
We’re not sure getting top brass out in uniforms is quite what Mr More had in mind when he pledged to blow away the bureaucratic quagmire at the council but it certainly seemed to do the job. Maybe too good a job judging by all the fun he seemed to have.
It sounds like Mr More might have trouble keeping the new man at his desk when he takes on the role of director of resources.
Mr Gilchrist said: “It was about getting out from behind the desk and experiencing first-hand some of the new challenges our CEOs spend helping people with directions and parking advice.
“I also feel that we need to put more time into explaining and clarifying our loading and unloading policies and improving our signs and lines.”
An enlightened management strategy we think you’ll agree.
Now all we want to know is: when is council leader Colin Barrow going to be collecting the bins?

Scans to shed light on gloomy subject

THEY might be plunged into darkness for half the year but Scandinavians aren’t such a gloomy bunch.

From the lands that brought us fjords, Santa Claus and Ulrika Jonsson, a delegation of five comedians have made the trip to London to try to dispel the myth.
Headed by the sassy Mette Lisby, who hosts Denmark’s version of Room 101 and Have I Got News For You, their new show certainly beats a night in with Ian Hislop.
The troupe of myth-busters will be performing a four-night special at the newly refurbished Leicester Square Theatre called Smorgasbord: Scandinavians in The Square.
Research shows Scandinavians are a theatre-loving bunch, making up 25 per cent of West End audiences, but they are hoping for something of a role reversal when the curtain rises on Sunday.
And if you’re worried it might be a case of lost in translation, don’t be.
The performers deliver all their gags in pitch-perfect English.
Among the other funny men and women in the five-piece are Norwegian
Daniel Simonsen, who saw off competition from 400 wannabes to win Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny 2008.
And there is Icelander Snorri Kristjannson – whose shape-shifting act sees him morph into Dylan Moran, complete with Irish brogue. Quite some feat.
The show is at the Leicester Square Theatre in Leicester Place from October 5-8.
