An upgrade for Mayfair
• YOUR readers may have seen a recent media report that Westminster City Council and property group Grosvenor are planning to improve streets in Mayfair and Belgravia by reducing the number of taxi ranks in the area.
At present Grosvenor and the council are still in the process of asking residents and businesses how they think Mount Street and Elizabeth Street can be improved. We want to enhance these elegant areas by reducing unnecessary clutter, planting trees and upgrading street furniture.
Contrary to the suggestions made in the media, there will be no reduction of residents’ parking bays, nor will the streets be pedestrianised, and while two taxi-rank spaces outside the Connaught will be lost, and is causing concern among residents, we would point out that the main taxi rank with five spaces by Mount Row will remain within sight of the Connaught.
After spending two years in discussions with residents and retailers about what they would like to see brought to the area we are delighted that the Mount Street scheme in particular elicited such a positive response at the recent exhibition which ran from September 17 to 20 at 100 Mount Street.
We will, of course, keep residents informed about our proposals, and will post regular updates on the “have your say”’ area of the website www.grosvenorpublic realm.co.uk before work starts in August 2009.
Residents with any local issues they may wish to raise can email publicrealm@grosvenor.com
Cllr Danny Chalkley
Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport
