Active strategy notes importance of swimming
• READERS may have noticed media coverage concerning a London Assembly report which says many parts of London have poor access to public swimming pools. In Westminster we are lucky enough to have access to four public swimming pools and a further six sport and leisure facilities with public access. The council is further encouraging its residents to get into the water with its plans to open two new sports centres (one with a swimming pool) within the next two years, an investment of £16.5 million. We have long anticipated the government’s proposal to let the old and young swim free and have been implementing this for some time.
We launched our Active Westminster strategy earlier this month, which notes that swimming is an important sport, and in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games will see a number of sporting initiatives taking place.

Cabinet Member for Customers and Neighbourhoods
