West End Extra - by JAMIE WELHAM

Cleaner air is the goal for council

AMBITIOUS plans to cut pollution and reduce vehicle emissions in central London are being drawn up by the council.

With more than a million visitors every day, Westminster has the most polluted air in London.
Environmental chiefs are launching a systematic review into the way the council tackles rising emissions.
A team will examine ways of getting more council vehicles to use alternative fuels, launching a comprehensive monitoring service and encouraging more people to ditch their cars in favour of walking, cycling and public transport.
Westminster became the first local authority in the UK to publish its Air Quality Strategy and Action Plan in 2001.
Councillor Danny Chalkley, cabinet member for environment and transport said: “Unpolluted air supports a good quality of life.
“Sadly, Westminster suffers the worst air pollution in the UK and we are working hard to generate a cleaner environment.
“Reducing emissions and increasing biodiversity are vital. We are working with the government and others to ensure our efforts are integrated and long lasting.”
Current council initiatives to improve air quality include car clubs where drivers can borrow cars on a pay-as-you-go basis, and an on-street recharging scheme for electric cars. The revised Air Quality Strategy will be issued next year following the review and further consultation.
