Works to curb speeding traffic
A TRAFFIC blackspot in Kilburn is set to be improved after years of campaigning by residents.
In recent years, Kilburn Lane just off the busy Harrow Road has become a rat-run for motorists and lorry drivers looking to cut across London, putting hundreds of children at nearby Wilberforce Primary School at risk, say campaigners.
Previous bids to make the residential road safer had been thrown off course by arguments over who should take responsibility.
But Transport for London, Brent and Westminster council’s have finally come together to tackle the problem head-on.
Following a public meeting last week, £100,000 has been earmarked for a range of traffic calming and pedestrian safety measures.
These will include raising kerbs along the lane, narrowing the entrance to the section by Banister Road to deter speeding and a number of environmental projects such as tree planting and re-paving.
Labour group leader and Queen’s Park councillor Paul Dimoldenberg said: “These works will have a real impact on traffic speeds along this section of Kilburn Lane and make life a lot better for residents.
“We will be monitoring the effects of these works closely and if the situation does not improve we will have a much stronger case to put to Brent Council and TfL.” |
