West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 24 October 2008
Commercial before residential!
• WE now have proof that the Conservatives are putting the commercial West End before residential parts of Westminster such as Paddington and Church Street.
Last week Westminster Conservatives on the planning committee decided to take £500,000 offered by a developer and spend it all on refurbishing Leicester Square instead of using the money to build more affordable housing elsewhere in Westminster as was originally planned.
And now, Conservative mayor Boris Johnson has decided to cancel the £2.5million that Transport for London had previously promised for improving the Edgware Road and has instead siphoned the money off to Leicester Square. So, in the past week the Conservatives have taken £3million from schemes in Paddington and Marylebone in order to pay for their “pet” schemes in the West End that will only benefit big business.
All this on top of the £17million poured down the Icelandic drain by Westminster Conservatives.
And these people have the gall to say they are running “the best council in the world”!
In these harsh economic times, protecting services for Westminster residents must be the priority.
Time for a reality check at City Hall. CLLR PAUL DIMOLDENBERG
