West End Extra - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Published: 31 October 2008
Mid-term mayhem • HALF-term holiday, full-time mayhem! That is, judging from the common anti-social behaviour being perpetrated by some youngsters who have patently nothing worthwhile, it seems, to occupy their time.
Is this holiday needed, especially when you consider the short time spent at school since the summer sojourn, and the short time before the Christmas break – followed by a further week off in February? Do the exam results justify this?
Joy-riding seems to be the order of the day, whether it’s on and off pavements flashing past vulnerable pedestrians at full speed, going through red lights at traffic junctions or even riding down one-way streets.
The streets are certainly alive, not unfortunately with the sounds of “music” – but with the sounds of screeching brakes.
Just how much longer do we have to put up with this menace? It is not just push bikes but moped and motor cycles that are a nuisance, and although there are no doubt many who do use a bicycle respectfully, there is also a sizeable minority who make life hell for pedestrians.
The resources to tackling this problem seem grossly limited. Ian Walker
