Walter Tull 1888-1918
A footballer and officer
• AS a resident of Folkestone and having lived here all my life I was fascinated to read an article in your paper about Walter Tull, the first black Army officer and professional footballer who amazingly was born in my home town (Black pioneer: Stars gather to
pay tribute to soldier and footballer, November 14). What makes it so amazing is that 99 per cent of local residents in Folkestone are white.
I somehow doubt that many people here are aware of Walter Tull, though if a film is coming out about him I am sure more locals will become aware of what he did and how brave he was.
Folkestone should erect a statue or plaque to this man as our only other famous resident was William Harvey (1578-1657) King Charles I’s personal physician and the man who discovered the circulation of blood.
Thanks for such a very good article.
